A Counterculture Life

In a world obsessed with self – self-worth, self-made success, self-development – the teachings of Jesus in the Bible stand in stunning, beautiful contrast. Our culture urges us to chase after more: more recognition, more achievement, more of “me, myself, and I.” Yet, the words of Christ in Matthew 16:25 cut through this noise with a radical invitation.

“For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.”

The Beauty of Surrender

At first glance, surrender sounds like weakness. Why give up control, ambitions, or even our own dreams? But Jesus flips the script: He teaches that true life – real, abundant, soul-deep life – isn’t found in clutching tightly to our own plans, but in letting go and trusting Him. This is not just a call to religious ritual, but to a transformation of the heart.

The world says: “Do what makes you happy. Build your own brand. Never settle.”

Jesus says: “Deny yourself. Take up your cross. Lose your life for my sake – and you will truly find it.”

It’s a paradox: the more we strive to “save” our lives through our own efforts, the emptier we become. But as countless followers of Jesus have discovered, there’s a freedom that only comes when we surrender – and only to Him.

  • Freedom from anxiety, because our worth isn’t tied to performance.
  • Freedom from comparison, because our identity is found in Christ, not in worldly accolades.
  • Freedom from fear, because our lives are held by the One who loves us perfectly.

In Christ, surrender is not defeat – it’s the gateway to abundant life, even through ups and downs. Jesus doesn’t promise a pain-free existence, but He does promise His presence, His peace, and a purpose that outlasts every earthly achievement.
