Don’t Be a Jonah: Answering the Call to Our Cities

Are you feeling the urge to run? Maybe a new city feels overwhelming, or the problems seem insurmountable. We’ve all been there. Just like Jonah (Jonah 1:3), we might be tempted to book a one-way ticket in the opposite direction when faced with the daunting task of loving and preaching to a city.

But there’s a powerful truth we can’t ignore: God calls us to be stewards, to engage with the places He’s placed us. Think about it: the city will be a place of God’s glory, a place He deeply cares about (Revelation 21:2). Here’s the challenge: How can we transform that feeling of “running away” into a powerful force for good?

  • Remember your empowerment. We aren’t alone in this. God equips us with the gifts and resources we need to make a difference (Ephesians 2:10).
  • Start small. Every act of love, every kind word, every helping hand is a step towards building the city God envisions (Proverbs 3:27).
  • Connect with others. We’re all wanderers, but we don’t have to wander alone. Find your tribe, your fellow city-changers, and support each other (Ecclesiastes 4:9).

As Dorothy Sayers reminds us, “The world is full of good things. Let’s get busy with those.” Let’s stop running and start building. Let’s love, preach, identify, and bless the cities we call home.

So, are you ready to answer the call? Let’s get started!
