Renewal and Christ-like Awareness

Life often takes us on unexpected journeys, leading us to new places, people and experiences. These encounters can be profound, especially when we reconnect with old friends who were once part of our lives but in a different context. Recently, I had the opportunity of reuniting with some dear friends in an environment where I had left behind old habits. This experience served as a reminder of how far I’ve come and the importance of Christ-like awareness and the impact that people can have on our lives, both as givers and takers.

Letting Go of Old Habits

In my personal journey, I’ve experienced the need to create some distance between myself and certain behaviours and influences that were leading me away from my faith and my ongoing process of self-improvement (a continuous process of realignment, of course). As I decided to move away from these old habits, I also had to separate from some friends who were either adamant in their ways or just not supportive of the change and faith I was embracing. This was a difficult decision, but one I felt was vital for my individual and spiritual development. As I embraced a change in my environment and the cues around me, it brought about a positive transformation, granting me greater clarity in life without the pressures of peer influence.

Givers and Takers

The experiences with my old friends made me reflect on the dynamics of relationships and how people can either be takers or givers. The former being individuals who primarily seek to benefit themselves, often at the expense of others, while givers are those who selflessly contribute to the well-being of those around them. And this can be in small things as just checking up on someone to the depth of conversation, to the differing outlook on life.

In the Bible, we find guidance on this topic in Philippians 2:4, which says, “Let each of you look not only to his own interests but also to the interests of others.” This verse encourages us to be mindful of the needs and interests of others, just as Christ did. And, as we navigate our relationships and encounters with old friends or new acquaintances, it goes a long way to check our gauge, as Christians, and evaluate the impact we have on others and the impact others have on us. Are we being takers, only concerned with our own interests, or are we striving to be givers, like Christ, by considering the interests of others?

Conclusion

Reconnecting with old friends who are on their own journeys of transformation can be a powerful reminder of the importance of Christ-like awareness and being mindful of the impact of people in our lives. As Christians, we are called to be givers, selflessly considering the needs of others, just as Christ did. Let us take Philippians 2:4 to heart and strive to be more mindful of the interests and well-being of those around us, whilst being intentional about maintaining the right influences in our lives. In doing so, we can continue on our own path of growth and transformation while positively impacting the lives of others, just as Christ intended.
